Board makes Aug. 14 a mandatory staff development day for Barnes and Hearn schools

Wilson County Schools administration asked the board on June 22 to revise the 2026–27 restart calendar for Barnes and Hearn Elementary, splitting the annual teaching-and-learning conference and making one day mandatory for certain grade bands.
Miss May told the board the district will split the conference so K–2 teachers attend professional development on Thursday, Aug. 13, and third–through‑fifth‑grade teachers attend on Friday, Aug. 14. "We need for that Friday to be a mandatory day instead of an optional day, which it was originally when the board approved this calendar," Miss May said.
She said the professional‑development days will be full days, with some outside facilitators for arts and health/PE while core content sessions will be led by curriculum coordinators and digital teaching and learning specialists.
Dr. Fitch moved, and Mr. Bats seconded, the motion to revise the restart calendar for Barnes and Hearn Elementary as presented by administration; the board voted unanimously to approve the revision.
The district did not present attendance or staffing implications, nor a detailed schedule for the PD days, during the public portion of the meeting.
