Durham appoints UNH student to Land Stewardship Subcommittee and hears Composting Challenge pitch

The Durham Town Council on Sept. 15 unanimously appointed Elliot Ng as an alternate to the Land Stewardship Subcommittee and heard a UNH student team present a pilot Composting Challenge for town leaders and employees.
Councilor Em Friedrichs introduced Ng, who described his dual master's work at UNH and experience in outdoor programs and trail stewardship. Councilor Friedrichs moved to appoint Ng; the motion was approved on a 9‑0 roll call vote.
Later, members of the UNH Sustainability Capstone group, introduced by IWMAC member Julie Kelley, outlined a six‑week Composting Challenge that runs Oct. 5 through Nov. 15. Town Council members and town employees who live in Durham are invited to participate, sign up online, receive compost bags/bins and weigh their compost and solid waste weekly (participants pay a $10 fee that is refunded upon completion). The Capstone students will compile weekly data and present results and recommendations to the Council and IWMAC at the challenge’s conclusion.
What’s next: Ng will begin service as an alternate member; the Capstone students will return with final results for Council and IWMAC consideration.
