The Mahtomedi Public School District board voted June 22 to approve the district's annual resolution to remain a member of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), while several board members used the discussion to press the League for clarity on its approach to transgender athlete participation.
Director Donna asked whether the League had provided any new guidance about allowing males to compete in female sports. Director Doman said he had raised the issue with the League at multiple meetings and was told “it is not something they plan to address,” adding that the League will distribute any legal updates through its formal channels.
District staff responded that no concerns had been brought to central administration. A staff member addressing the board said, “I have nothing to report” in terms of local complaints and noted that coaches and building administrators “work with our students to figure out how to best support all children in feeling safe and supported in our schools.” The board also heard that season‑end surveys and coach feedback are available avenues for raising concerns.
Several directors framed the matter differently: some urged the League to provide clearer guidance, and others emphasized that League membership enables broad participation in interscholastic activities. The board discussed the possibility of inviting a League representative to a future meeting for direct discussion.
The motion to adopt the membership resolution was moved by Director Peterson and seconded by Director Doman; the roll‑call vote was unanimous in favor. Board members said the action secures student eligibility for MSHSL activities while allowing the district to pursue further information from the League and to track any changes that might affect student safety or competitive fairness.
What happens next: the administration and board members said they would monitor communications from the MSHSL, consider inviting a League representative for a briefing, and rely on established school reporting channels if student concerns arise.
