Ogden police detail Oct. 27 standoff, propose crosswalk and parking changes near elementary school

Chief Bailey reported to the Ogden City Council on Nov. 11 that a standoff on Oct. 27 drew assistance from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Boone County officials, and that the incident ended without injury.
Bailey said the event was not near either school and that, because there was no active threat to students, officials decided not to alert the district at the time to avoid triggering a broader lockdown. He and Sheriff Godzicki later met with Superintendent Heyer to clarify communications and conducted safety walkthroughs at both school buildings.
The chief asked the council to consider three measures aimed at improving safety during student drop-off and pick-up: installing a crosswalk and converting the NW 4th and W. Elm intersection to a four-way stop to address increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic tied to the elementary school and the Zion Lutheran preschool; converting the right-of-way on the west side of the park into additional parking to reduce congestion; and producing a public-service announcement with the elementary school about safe drop-off and pickup procedures.
The report included activity totals: 78 calls for service in September and 39 hours and 45 minutes of school-duty time logged by the department that month. Chief Bailey thanked regional partners for their assistance during the Oct. 27 response.
Council members heard the report as an informational item; no formal traffic-control decision was recorded that evening. The matter is expected to return if council or staff advance any ordinance or traffic-control resolutions for later readings and formal votes.
