Okoboji staff recommends recodifying zoning and reviewing sign, ADU and short-term rental rules

City Administrator Michael Meyers told the Okoboji Planning and Zoning Commission on March 30 that the city needs to recodify its zoning ordinance and review the sign ordinance and other inconsistencies introduced by legislative changes.
Meyers said several ordinances have changed over time and the city has not fully updated its online code, making it difficult for residents to find current rules. “I want to take a look at the sign ordinance,” Meyers said, adding that he feels the sign rules are difficult for everyone to interpret. He also identified accessory dwelling units and short-term rentals as topics that should be clarified in a recodification effort.
Commissioners Barb Mendenhall and Matt Lanfear said they would review the comprehensive plan and the county’s future land use plan to align city planning; Commissioner Barry Nadler offered to help with the sign ordinance work. The commission did not adopt ordinance language changes at the meeting but assigned volunteer review tasks.
The meeting adjourned at 6:42 p.m.
