Okoboji council approves police vehicle purchase, attorney appointment and several reappointments

The Okoboji City Council approved a series of routine actions at its Jan. 13 meeting, including a $49,500.00 purchase of a 2025 Ford F-150 Police Responder, adoption of Resolution #26-01 to appoint the city attorney, and multiple board reappointments.
Mayor Mary VanderWoude presented the police vehicle quote and Police Chief Jason Petersen confirmed the vehicle had been budgeted for fiscal year 2026 and would be ready for pickup if the city proceeded. Councilmember Delperdang moved to approve the quote; Councilmember Hoppe seconded. Councilmembers Delperdang, Hoppe and Sanders voted "YEA" and the motion passed 3-0.
The council next considered Resolution #26-01, "A Resolution Regarding Appointment of Attorney." City Administrator Michael Meyers said there is no statutory requirement to appoint an attorney by resolution but reported that City Attorney David Stein recommended adopting the resolution as a matter of good practice. Councilmember Delperdang moved to approve the resolution; Councilmember Andres seconded. The motion passed 4-0.
The council confirmed appointments to city boards. Mayor VanderWoude presented the reappointment of Babs Liesveld to the Board of Adjustment; Councilmember Andres moved to reappoint Liesveld to a term ending Jan. 13, 2031, and the motion passed 4-0. The council also appointed Denise Norland to the Board of Adjustment for a term ending Jan. 13, 2031; Councilmember Hoppe moved and Councilmember Andres seconded, and the motion passed 4-0.
A reappointment to the Planning and Zoning Commission prompted discussion about term length. Meyers noted the agenda listed a five-year term, but Ordinance No. 279 reduced Planning and Zoning terms from five years to three years; he said the agenda reflected the longer term in error. Councilmember Delperdang moved (seconded by Councilmember Sanders) to reappoint Barbara Mendenhall with a term ending Jan. 13, 2029. The motion passed 3-1, with Councilmember Hoppe voting "NAY."
The council adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
