Okoboji commission recommends approval of lakeshore stabilization at 7111 Lake Shore Drive

The City of Okoboji Planning and Zoning Commission on March 30 recommended approval of a lakeshore landscaping application for 7111 Lake Shore Drive.
Mat Hanson described the existing lakeshore as having a failing timber wall and said the proposed work would use a geoweb stabilization system. City Administrator Michael Meyers told the commission that the plans had been submitted to the City Engineer “and the review came back clean with no suggested deficiencies,” and added that “the geoweb system is something that has historically been used and well received.”
Commissioner Barb Mendenhall asked whether retaining walls were part of the project; Meyers clarified that the limestone references were the four-foot steps and walk to the dock and that no retaining wall systems were proposed. Meyers also said applicants are instructed to keep access routes four feet wide and as direct to the dock as possible unless switchbacks are needed for accessibility.
Commissioner Barry Nadler moved to recommend approval; Commissioner John McMahon seconded the motion. The commission voted unanimously, 5-0, to recommend the application.
The recommendation will be forwarded per the city’s procedure for final administrative action. The commission did not set an adoption date at the meeting.
