Committee backs Board of Health warrant article to regulate underground propane tanks

The Charter and Bylaw Review Committee voted 6-0 on July 3, 2025, to support a warrant article requested by the Board of Health that would modify bylaw Article 81 and add a new section to Article 22 to address underground propane tanks.
Committee members discussed the Board of Health’s goals: regulate where underground propane tanks may be placed so they will not interfere with septic systems, drainage fields or wetlands, and to exempt underground propane tanks from the fuel-monitoring provisions that apply to other fuel storage because the department said propane is a gas and will not pollute the ground in the same way as liquid fuels.
Committee member Harriet Merkowitz moved to accept the proposed warrant article to modify Article 81 and add the new section to Article 22; committee member Saul Beaumont seconded the motion. The committee voted by roll call, 6-0-0, to support the article. The warrant article will be placed on the warrant for an upcoming Town Meeting for full consideration by the town electorate.
