Michigan City’s airport manager, Jessica Ward, reported to the Board of Aviation Commissioners on June 18 that fuel sales have risen sharply and that staff have completed a series of infrastructure upgrades and scheduled community events.
Ward said the airport has used 40% of its operating budget year-to-date and 85% of its building-repair account, the latter largely because of upgrades to gasoline and diesel pumps. "We have used 85% of our building repair account funds," she said, adding the pumps were converted from DC to AC and that leak gauges and fuel gauges were replaced.
Ward provided May fuel-sales detail: 5,328.5 gallons of 100LL avgas, 4,835 gallons of Jet A and 218.8 gallons of UL94; she said year-to-date fuel sales are "up 132% over last year." Board members noted increased transient general aviation traffic and low fuel prices as contributing factors.
On longer-term fuel infrastructure, Paul Laker said fuel-farm contracts are signed and that Hoosier Equipment placed a deposit for new tanks, with shipments scheduled for Jan. 27. He warned that IDEM reimbursement requires removal of the old tanks and an approved closure report before the airport will receive reimbursement for eligible work.
Community outreach: Ward announced airport events including participation in the June 27 parade, an FOP fly-in pancake breakfast on June 28, and the airport’s second annual Airport Day on Sunday, July 12 with $50 airplane rides and discounted $199 tandem skydives.
The board did not vote on the fuel-farm contract at this meeting; Laker said site prep will precede tank delivery and that winter timing could be both beneficial (less fuel movement) and challenging (digging in frozen or muddy ground).
