Olds council reviews sewer compliance needs, approves $750 meter‑software purchase

At its Dec. 11 meeting, the Olds City Council heard utility reports and approved a one-time $750 purchase of RVS software to enable compatibility with the city’s meter radio-read system. The purchase was approved on a motion by Sheila Tharp, seconded by Candice Curry, and passed 5–0.
Utility operator Russell Conrad reported unaccounted-for water of 10.46% and total November water usage of 562,000 gallons. Council reviewed water-fund expenses that included $2,150 for water-tower clean out and $1,975.40 for recent meter installations. The water-fund bills for December totaled $8,800.19.
On sewer issues, the clerk reported that staff are preparing a sewer-permit extension request for a pilot program to be submitted to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on Dec. 12, 2024; council reviewed a monthly DNR report and discussed the need to build new lagoon discharge pit covers next year because of the condition of the existing covers. The council discussed increasing sewer rates to cover compliance and capital needs and directed the clerk to prepare proposed step increases for future council consideration.
The council also received routine financial reports and set the next meeting for Jan. 8, 2025.
