Olds council adopts backflow-prevention ordinance, approves $33,085 radio-read meter system and contracts

The Olds City Council on Oct. 9 adopted Ord. 03-2024, "An Ordinance Adopting New Chapter 5-3-30 of the Olds City Code of Ordinances to Provide Cross Contamination and Back Flow Prevention Regulations," following a 5–0 roll-call vote that completed the ordinance's third and final reading.
Council also approved a quote from Municipal Supply Inc. for a radio-read meter system — including software, support and Smartpoint transmitters — at a cost of $33,085. The council reviewed a separate handheld reader quote for $525 but voted to move forward with the full radio-read system. The motion to purchase the radio-read system passed 5–0.
Other formal actions at the meeting included awarding the only snow-removal bid to Jason Unternahrer for the 2024–2025 season; the council instructed the clerk to add contract language specifying that all streets, gravel alleys and the lagoon road are included. A motion to approve a $2,000 cost-share for sidewalk repairs at 112 S. Main (the office and wood shop of LJ Roth), excluding raising the height of the existing concrete, passed on a 4–1 vote; Councilmember Sheila Tharp cast the lone nay.
The meeting began with a consent agenda approved 5–0 that included the agenda, the Sept. 11 minutes and the listed bills. The clerk presented fund disbursements for water, city and sewer funds during the meeting.
