Olds adopts backflow-prevention ordinance to address cross-contamination risks

The Olds City Council approved the second reading of Ordinance 03-2024 on Sept. 11, adopting new city-code language (Chapter 5-3-30) to establish cross-contamination and backflow-prevention regulations for municipal water systems.
During the meeting Councilmember Sheila Tharp moved approval of the second reading and Councilmember Timothy Breuer seconded; the ordinance passed on a roll-call vote with five ayes. Council did not record additional amendments during the session; the ordinance was adopted as presented in the second-reading motion.
The newly adopted chapter is intended to reduce risks of contaminants entering the municipal water distribution system through backflow events and to set requirements for prevention measures. The clerk will update the city code to reflect the new chapter and communicate implementation steps to affected properties where required.
