Each recited the traditional oath: "I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Iowa ... and that I will faithfully and impartially to the best of my ability discharge all the duties" of their respective offices, after which each official signed the required paperwork and received applause.
Earlier in the meeting council members recognized outgoing service. An outgoing member who identified as "Sammy" said this was the last meeting of his term and thanked colleagues and staff, reflecting that "I voted with my heart" over four years of service. Several council members and the mayor offered thanks and wished the incoming officials well.
