City asks Atlantic school board to join committee to evaluate detention pond on school property

A city representative said ISU selected Atlantic for a mayor’s-design pilot and produced plans that include a detention basin to slow downtown runoff and reduce flooding at locations that have flooded in the past. The city asked whether two school board members would join a committee with Dr. Johnson, council members and public-works staff to review possible school-property sites and to help define the pond’s size so the city could pursue grant funding.
City staff noted the city previously applied for $4 million in grant funding for the project but did not receive that award; they said further grant work requires a confirmed site and size. Board members responded that they could participate in conversations and that site suitability and impacts (including educational opportunities tied to the basin) should be explored.
No board vote was required that night; the board took the request under advisement and members agreed to consider appointing representatives to the committee after internal review.
