The Atlantic Community School District board discussed the FY22–23 audit on Nov. 12, focusing on internal‑control recommendations and when the district will complete the FY23–24 audit.
District staff told the board the FY22–23 audit, conducted by new firm Bergen KDB, identified the district’s primary audit issue as insufficient segregation of duties in the accounting office and recurring difficulties reconciling student counts used for state reporting. The district said it has begun process changes to reduce the risk of the same person handling multiple steps in payroll and cash transactions.
Board members asked when the newer audit work would be finished. Staff said the FY23–24 audit work is underway and that a draft could be available for board review in early December with the goal of bringing a final report to the board for approval in the December meeting cycle; staff also noted the firm’s remote workflow has required the district to run and upload reports rather than letting auditors run them directly.
“Because the auditors were a new firm and use different formats and procedures, the work took longer, but it was a good learning experience,” a staff presenter said. The presenter added that the audit firm recommended continuing to tighten checks and balances; auditors expect similar findings while the district continues to adjust processes.
The board discussed whether to invite Bergen KDB to present the audit in person at a future meeting; staff recommended inviting the firm to speak when a final report for FY23–24 is available. There was no formal vote on the audit report itself at the Nov. 12 meeting; staff said the FY23–24 audit should be ready for board action at a meeting in December.
Votes at a glance - Motion to approve the agenda: approved by voice vote (recorded yeses during the meeting). - Motion to approve the October financial report: approved (recorded yes votes by five board members). - Motion to approve the consent agenda (minutes, routine bills, open enrollment, staff movement): approved by voice vote.
What happens next: Staff plan to finalize the FY23–24 audit materials for a December board packet and to schedule an auditor presentation once the final report is available.
