The Grain Valley R‑V Board recognized student accomplishments at its June 28 meeting, celebrating state-level and national competition results in speech and debate and the performances of Special Olympics athletes.
Jillian Humpkey, identified as the high school head coach for the speech and debate team, introduced qualifiers and summarized their season. She noted several district qualifiers advanced to state and that student Dylan Rosinski won the state championship in storytelling and placed eighth nationally in humorous interpretation. Humpkey also highlighted multiple finalists at state and repeated district championships for other students.
Amanda Chrisman introduced Special Olympics athletes and coaches, listing individual athletes who competed at the state level in bowling, basketball and track and field. Chrisman said the program will add unified flag football in two weeks to broaden opportunities for student-athletes.
The board took a moment to invite anyone who wished to leave the remainder of the meeting to do so after recognitions and then moved on to reports and business. The recognitions included both student competitors and coaches; a number of athletes were noted as not present at the meeting but were recognized by name.
The board did not take formal votes related to the recognitions; the items were presented as part of the recognitions/announcements portion of the agenda.
