School board honors students and FFA degree recipients; superintendent previews summer projects

The Washington County School Board opened its June 25 meeting by recognizing students for academic growth, high SOL performance and FFA accomplishments, and by thanking staff and teachers who supported those results.
Dr. Ferguson led the recognition portion and called forward students including Nikki Sut of Valley Institute Elementary for exceptional growth and Andrew Scott, a fifth grader who scored 600s on multiple Standards of Learning assessments. The board also recognized multiple FFA state-degree and American-degree recipients from Abingdon, John Battle, Holston and Patrick Henry high schools; students and teachers were photographed with board members.
Later in the agenda Superintendent Dr. Baker gave a summer projects preview, listing top maintenance items scheduled while school is out: technology-building roof repairs, a security vestibule at Meadow View Elementary, extension of car-rider lines at High Point and Watauga, new bus parking and paving projects, restroom renovations to make facilities ADA-compliant, and construction of restrooms to support new tennis courts. Staff said some projects are expected to finish before the next school year and noted ongoing work across the division.
Board members congratulated students and coaches and thanked facilities staff for the summer work. There were no formal votes tied specifically to the recognitions; several other agenda items later in the meeting produced unanimous action votes.
