Union City approves $5,000 sinkhole repair, awards $84,774 park and trail contract

Union City Borough Council on July 23 unanimously approved a $5,000 quote from Mansfield to repair and reconnect storm sewer pipe at a sinkhole in Municipal Lot No. 1 and awarded a separate bid for the Devereaux Park/French Creek Trail project to Vavala Concrete for $84,774.

The motion to accept Mansfield’s $5,000 quote — with the borough providing pipe and fittings at an additional estimated cost of $5,000 — was made by Councilor James Kerns and seconded by Councilor Steadman and carried unanimously. Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips told council that crews had introduced dye into the storm drain near Hogan’s Alley and that dye appears to be entering sanitary lines serving Municipal Lot No. 1; he said he is arranging camera inspections to locate the problem. Riley suggested extending the camera run toward the Salvation Army to inspect the line farther downstream.

Council also considered bids for the Devereaux Park/French Creek Trail project, with Vavala Concrete submitting the low bid of $84,774. Councilor Osborn moved to award the contract to Vavala Concrete; Councilor Steadman seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The council did not raise additional funding conditions during the award.
