Rolfe council approves routine permits, purchases, donation; schedules budget meeting

The Rolfe City Council on Feb. 10 approved routine consent items and heard brief public comment before setting a budget meeting for Feb. 18.
On the consent agenda the council approved building permit #01‑2025 for Liberato Guaman at 605 Elm St (motion Cox/Jackson) and permit #02‑2025 for Windstream Iowa Communications at 402 Railroad St (motion Allen/Cox). The consent agenda—covering the agenda, minutes and bills—was approved (Pratt/Jackson), and the council reviewed a claims list totaling $188,858.48 and payroll entries recorded in the minutes.
Council members also approved buying a carpet cleaner to be shared by the library, community center and city hall at an approximate cost of $230, and re‑approved a $1,000 donation to UDMO. Mayor Jim Pentico reported locating a 2019 Dodge pickup for the utility department; the council voted to sell the older pickup at an upcoming Sale Barn sale (Jackson/Minkler).
Clerk Brandi Henderson told the council that a penalty had been added to all utility accounts for past‑due payments and that the city plans to change the penalty percentage and door‑post fees by ordinance. Council members said the city is validating property insurance coverage. Councilman Al Minkler mentioned the need for a new fire truck, and Councilwoman Lana Pratt asked that the community center exhaust fan be repaired.
During public comment, Glenn Munson suggested ideas for budget cutting and Cody Rogers asked about the city’s contract with Bennett Sanitation; council members said they would consider the remarks. The council announced additional nuisance‑abatement court hearings in March and set a budget meeting for Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the community center. The meeting adjourned at 7:09 p.m.
