At its Jan. 26 meeting, the Baxter City Council directed the City Engineer to extend curb and gutter along the existing concrete pavement as part of the Rippey Intersection and Chichaqua Valley Trail Improvements project.
The City Engineer asked the council whether the design should include new curb and gutter now to prevent later removal if North West Avenue is reconstructed. Councilmember Milligan moved to direct the engineer to proceed with extending curb and gutter and to finalize plans; Councilmember Bethards seconded the motion, which carried unanimously (Bethards, Milligan, Schabilion, Smith).
Council’s direction is intended to reduce the risk that future reconstruction of North West Avenue would necessitate undoing recently installed curb and gutter. The meeting record does not include cost estimates, funding sources, or an updated project timeline; staff and the engineer were asked to finalize plans consistent with the council’s direction.
Next steps: the City Engineer will incorporate the curb-and-gutter extension into final design documents prior to bid or construction; no action on contracting or funding was taken at the meeting.
