Council approves cybersecurity purchase, addresses alley drainage and community funding moves

At its Sept. 3 meeting the Milo City Council approved a small IT purchase, reviewed a resident drainage complaint, and took a series of routine community funding and event actions.

The council approved the Combined Systems Technology (CST) quote for an internet bridge/firewall for a cybersecurity update at $2,560.39; the motion noted CST must provide technical support to connect devices into the bridge. The clerk said city email accounts will migrate to the @cityofmilo.com domain as part of the update.

Resident Alana Johnstone raised a concern about excess stormwater runoff in an unmaintained alley at 419 Elm Street. Operations Director Doug Hembry said the tiling is known to staff and suggested the homeowner could trim tiling back to redirect flow; Mayor Hall said he would follow up with Johnstone.

Council approved Resolution 2024-17 (FY2024 Milo Street Financial Report) and Resolution 2024-18 transferring $4,624.57 from the RAGBRAI account to park improvements. The council approved $750 for decorating Main Street planters (split $200 for fall, $550 for winter) and set Milo Beggars Night for Oct. 30, 2024, from 6–8 p.m. Council also noted Milo Hometown Pride RAGBRAI food-stand proceeds of $3,831.03 and an expected additional ~$419 from leftover candy-bar sales; they requested Renee Hembry attend the next meeting to discuss library capital-improvement fundraising, which the clerk said is near $215,000 saved toward an addition.

Council directed the clerk to invite Sheriff Carico to the October meeting to discuss law enforcement and code-enforcement concerns in Milo. The meeting adjourned at 8:53 p.m.

Next steps: Mayor Hall will follow up with the resident about the alley; the clerk will coordinate the email migration and invite Sheriff Carico to the October meeting.
