Library officials present $215,200 building fund and plan to break ground in 2026

Library Director Renee Hembry and Library Board President Mike Harrington told the council on Oct. 7 that the library building fund currently totals $215,200. Hembry said the city has contributed $40,000 in Local Option Sales Tax since 2017; fundraising, donations and budget residuals total $157,200; memorials and designated donations total $18,000.
Harrington said the board estimates the new building addition will cost about $350,000 and expects to break ground in 2026. The planned programming room would include a kitchenette, restrooms, tables and chairs to relieve current program-space crowding, which sometimes occurs during regular business hours.
Council discussed the preliminary plans and directed that three bids be obtained for the project. Hembry and the Clerk will pursue grants to fund the remaining balance. The council did not vote to commit additional city funds during the Oct. 7 meeting; the board and city staff will return with bids and grant outcomes for future consideration.
The council also reviewed projected LOST balances after trail payments and ongoing monthly LOST deposits into wastewater and general funds.
