Monticello Comm School District board approves OPN Architects agreement after community design session

The Monticello Comm School District Board of Education on Jan. 27 approved an Agreement and Rider Between Owner and Architect with OPN Architects to begin design work for a proposed new elementary school.
Katie Harms of OPN Architects led a programming activity at the meeting in which board members, administrators and several parents and community members reviewed renderings, room layouts and outdoor-area concepts. Participants were asked what features are essential in the new elementary and what would make the project successful; board materials indicate those preferences will inform schematic work.
Motion by John Schlarmann, seconded by Tony Amsler, carried with ayes from Mark Rieken, Tony Amsler, Craig Stadtmueller, Mandy Norton and John Schlarmann and no nays. The contract approval authorizes the district to move forward with architect-led programming and design steps outlined by OPN.
Superintendent Brian Jaeger thanked Harms for facilitating the session and said OPN had also run similar activities with staff groups. Jaeger told the board the district will continue to update the board as the project advances and that Harms will attend monthly meetings to share progress. He also said the administration is finalizing next year’s school calendar for presentation at the February work session.
Board members praised the community engagement at the programming activity and noted the input will help shape priorities such as learning spaces, maker areas and outdoor access. No formal timeline or project budget was specified at the Jan. 27 meeting; those details are expected in future board materials.
The board meeting was held in the Board Room at 850 East Oak Street and adjourned at 7:32 p.m.
