Board tables $1.7 million loan to Orange Grove Fire District after resident raises transparency concerns

Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford clarified the county’s role is to allow the fire district to borrow through the county’s spring financing to obtain lower interest rates; the county is not approving the fire district’s project itself.
Commissioner Earl McKee moved to table item 8‑k to the April 21, 2026 meeting to allow fire district representatives to appear and address community concerns. The motion passed with five ayes (McKee, Greene, Carter, Hamilton, Portie‑Ascott) and two nays (Vice‑Chair Amy Fowler and Commissioner Bedford).
Why it matters: The county’s spring financing can lower borrowing costs for special‑purpose fire districts, but residents and commissioners pressed for clearer communication from the fire district to its constituents before the county authorizes loan participation.
