Council hears Santa-house fundraising plans, Main Street Iowa walkthrough concerns and street-repair update

"People do not want to come see Santa inside of a building; they want to see him in his house," one speaker said while outlining plans to host extra weekends and partner with local events to broaden fundraising.
Separately, council members reported that Main Street Iowa conducted a walkthrough and approved final payouts for a grant-funded project, but council members observed a quarter-inch gap around several newly installed windows and questioned whether the work met the grant specifications. A council member asked who can authorize corrective work or require the contractor to finish outstanding items; staff said the city may have authority and will follow up to determine the correct contact and remedy.
During public comment, a resident asked whether East Street repairs used the same method as a nearby road. Public Works staff Rusty answered: "They milled down the existing pavement and the old overlay and just basically turned it into a gravel road," and said crews compacted the material with plans to overlay it in a future project.
Staff also provided brief project updates: near-completion of Smith Street work, park construction at Gregory with new trailer pad work underway, and engineering reviews for downtown façade repairs that will be presented to the council when more information is available.
The meeting closed with mayoral remarks thanking staff for traffic guidance at a recent Trick-or-Treat event, reminding councilors about the public-comment rules and noting the city is in bargaining with a labor union; the mayor asked that inquiries be directed to the established bargaining committee.
