The board had met in closed session under Texas Government Code section 551.071 (consultation with attorney) and section 551.074 (personnel) before returning to open session; board members said no final vote was taken during the closed portion.
“In selecting an interim we believe an experienced external superintendent can provide the perspective, stability and leadership necessary to help guide the district through this period,” Trustee Ms. Ryan said, adding the choice was “not intended to reflect negatively on the capabilities of any internal candidate.”
An unnamed trustee who spoke during discussion described the district as facing “very enormous” challenges and said, “it is a dark time in our district,” noting the interim role will be difficult and that a permanent search will follow. Trustee Ms. Stanford said she had initially considered an internal candidate, Dr. Toppin, but concluded continuity with an external interim—citing prior stability attributed to Dr. Jaklich—was preferable now.
The motion to appoint Dr. Ann Dixon passed by a 6–1 vote. After the vote, the board welcomed Dr. Dixon and summarized her background, saying she has served as interim superintendent in 26 Texas districts, including previously in Judson ISD, and that she is experienced in school finance and district turnaround work.
The board adjourned the special meeting at 7:04 PM.
