Board approves 2025‑26 handbooks and completes policy readings

The Monticello board approved the 2025‑26 suite of student, faculty and program handbooks and completed first and final readings on multiple district policies, including nondiscrimination, employment procedures and records rules.
The Monticello Community School District board approved a package of 2025‑26 handbooks and completed policy readings at its July 28 meeting.
On a motion by Mark Rieken, seconded by Amsler, the board approved the following handbooks as presented: Elementary Student & Parent, Elementary Faculty, Middle School Student & Parent, Middle School Faculty, High School Student & Parent, High School Faculty, Alternative High School (to be added to the high school handbook), Activities Department, the 1‑to‑1 Technology Handbook, and the Panther Academy Parent Handbook. The vote was unanimous.
The board approved the first reading of policies #804.3 (Capital Assets), #804.3R1 (Capital Assets‑Regulation), and deletion of #804.4 (Intangible Assets) on a motion by John Schlarmann, seconded by Mark Rieken. The board also approved second and final readings of an extensive package of policies covering equal educational opportunity; grievance procedures; superintendent and administrator qualifications; employment and leaves; open enrollment; chronic absenteeism; educational records; multicultural and gender‑fair education; video cameras on school grounds; expenditures for a public purpose; internal controls; school district records and public examination of records, among others. Those motions carried unanimously.
Curriculum Director Robyn Ponder and building principals presented related updates during the meeting, including the district's planned adoption of the Open SciEd science curriculum and staff trainings scheduled for August. The board did not change handbook contents substantially and asked staff to distribute handbooks and materials to families and staff before school starts.
The approvals position the district to begin the school year with updated guidance for students, staff and extracurricular programs.
