The Monticello Community School District Board of Education approved the district’s 2025–26 certified budget, staff contracts and a $585,000 bond resolution during its April 28 regular meeting at the district board room.
The board voted to direct $400,000 to the management fund and to increase income surtax on the instructional support levy to 6% plus a 1% PPEL income surtax. The board approved a total levy rate of $15.68502 if the governor signs the 2% State Supplemental Aid (SSA) before the budget deadline; if not signed in time the board approved a levy rate of $16.03653.
Superintendent Brian Jaeger thanked the board for working through the budget process. "I appreciate their commitment," Jaeger said, noting district staff and board collaboration during budget preparation.
The board also approved personnel contracts for 2025–26. Non‑certified and administrative staff will receive a 1.44% pay increase and certified staff will receive a $1,000 increase; the motion excluded positions covered by the state’s new teacher pay law, such as nurses, social workers and counselors. The motion to approve certified, non‑certified and administrative contracts passed unanimously.
By roll call vote the board adopted a resolution providing for the levy of taxes to pay general obligation school bonds and approved engaging professionals for issuance in the amount of $585,000. The board unanimously approved interfund transfers from the Capital Fund to the SAVE Fund and the PPEL Fund and authorized issuance of individual procurement cards (p‑cards).
Other fiscal and administrative approvals included adopting a Corporate MasterCard Program member account agreement with BMO Harris Bank. The board approved the agreement by voice vote.
Smaller operational motions approved during the meeting included a one‑time high school fundraiser to sell reserved graduation seats (approved on a 3–2 vote), an 8th‑grade canoe‑trip fundraiser, approval of the School Improvement Advisory Committee recommendations, and setting May 28, 2025, with a 1:00 p.m. dismissal as the last student day and May 29 as teachers’ last contract day.
The board moved into a closed session later in the evening under Iowa Code Chapter 21.5(1)(i) to evaluate the professional competency of an individual and reconvened before adjourning.
