Council approves $1.06 million Spartan rescue pumper purchase to replace aging apparatus

The Zeeland Common Council on Feb. 16 authorized purchase of a Spartan rescue pumper from CSI Emergency Apparatus for $1,058,806, using the Sourcewell cooperative purchasing contract and waiving the traditional bid process.
Interim Fire/Rescue Chief Mitch Harsevoort described the department’s fleet needs and said the 1997 heavy rescue (unit 1931) and 1998 Pierce rescue pumper (1923) had passed recommended service lives. Harsevoort explained the department elected to retain a recent pumper to serve as a spare and recommended replacing the older rescue apparatus with a pump-equipped rescue pumper to increase redundancy and pumping capacity and to support paid-on-call staffing needs.
Staff recommended a stock rescue pumper to reduce cost and lead time compared with a custom build and listed key attributes: a five-person cab, a 1,500-gallon-per-minute pump, 750-gallon water tank, 20-gallon foam system and a six-bottle cascade air-fill system. Harsevoort said the stock approach would save an estimated $100,000–$200,000 and still meet operational needs. Council approved the motion unanimously; motor pool funds are to be allocated in the 2026/2027 budget and payment is planned within 20 days of final inspection.
