Zeeland council appoints Brad Deppe as fire/rescue chief and approves server and HVAC contracts

The Zeeland Common Council on March 2 accepted the mayor’s recommendation to appoint Brad Deppe as the city’s Fire/Rescue Chief effective March 23, 2026, with a starting annual salary of $110,000.
Council approved the appointment by unanimous vote after staff said the Fire/Rescue Search Committee had completed phone and in-person interviews and had extended a conditional offer subject to a physical exam and background checks.
The action items portion of the agenda also included two procurement approvals. Council authorized the purchase of three replacement SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) servers at a not-to-exceed cost of $45,675, which includes a 5% contingency; staff said the purchase will be made through the State of Michigan MiDeal cooperative contract and noted the acquisition remains within previously approved capital allocations. The council voted unanimously to proceed.
Council further waived formal bidding and awarded a contract to Trane U.S. Inc. for the IntelliPak rooftop unit refresh service at City Hall in the amount of $34,450. Staff described the work as proprietary to Trane, recommended factory-authorized personnel perform the refresh, and noted the refresh carries a two-year compressor parts-and-labor warranty and one year parts coverage on other replaced components; council approved the contract unanimously.
Other business: Council appointed Sabina Otteman to the Cemetery/Parks Commission for a term through May 6, 2029, and approved a Hold Harmless Agreement with Mead Johnson that had been added to the agenda earlier in the meeting. Mayor Pro-Tem Gruppen said a Manager performance review will be circulated to council members for input, and Mayor Richard Van Dorp III reported attending the governor’s State of the State address at Representative Brad Slagh’s invitation.
