Planning commission schedules April public hearing on Mead Johnson request to vacate North Division Street

The City of Zeeland Planning Commission voted March 5 to schedule a public hearing for its April 16 meeting on a request from Mead Johnson, LLC to vacate a portion of North Division Street north of Main Avenue.
Zoning Administrator Timothy Maday reviewed the referral from City Council and the City’s street-vacation process, including a July 13, 2011 City Attorney memorandum that governs the procedure. Maday told commissioners the matter was referred by Council and that the Planning Commission must decide whether to require a traffic study before making a recommendation to Council.
Allan Barron, identified in the record as a Mead Johnson representative, told the Commission the company "does not believe a traffic study is warranted," saying the segment is not a through street and is bordered entirely by property under Mead Johnson’s ownership. City staff said they do not currently anticipate a need for a traffic study but that the Commission may require one if information presented at the public hearing suggests additional analysis would be beneficial.
Commissioner Rebecca Perkins moved to schedule the public hearing for April 16; the motion, supported by Commissioner Sheri Holgeste, passed by roll call with all present commissioners voting in favor and Commissioner Daniel Klompmaker recorded as absent.
The public hearing will be held before the Planning Commission; after the Commission develops its recommendation, the item will proceed to a City Council public hearing prior to any final Council action.
