Malden BPW approves Evergy EMA agreement, raising monthly service fee to $7,000

The Malden Board of Public Works voted Jan. 21 to approve an amended Evergy EMA (energy management agreement) that raises the monthly service fee to $7,000.
Utility Director Ivone Smith told the board the amended EMA agreement and rate adjustment would be on an annual basis and that the $7,000 monthly fee will be built into the City of Malden’s cost of operations. She said the prior $4,500 monthly rate had been in place for about ten years.
Board Member Stone moved to approve the agreement and the rate increase; Board Member Woods seconded. The minutes record “MOTION PASSED.” The board directed that the approved agreement be presented to the City Council for final approval at its Jan. 27, 2025 regular session.
Why it matters: the higher monthly service fee increases the utilities’ operating cost base and may be reflected in customer rates or the utility’s budget. The board did not record a roll-call vote tally in the minutes; the action is recorded as approved and will require City Council action.
