Residents urged the Malden City Council on Nov. 18 to address a string of incidents in which loose dogs injured and killed animals in the city.
At the start of the council’s regular session, Dee Loyd said multiple incidents of dogs running loose have resulted in animal deaths and asked the council to hire a part-time dog catcher to cover weekends. Kristi Rawlings described a recent dog attack she suffered and voiced frustration with enforcement.
Council Member Joyce said the city should enforce existing ordinances where they apply. Mayor Denton Kooyman said he would look into forming a committee to explore possible solutions and report back; he asked staff to examine whether the city is responsible for enforcement in the reported cases.
The council did not take immediate action or approve funding at the Nov. 18 meeting. Council members discussed that staffing and budget constraints may limit options and asked staff to bring information on costs and ordinance text for further consideration.
