Mat Hough, president of the Ansonia Federation of Teachers, used the public comment period on Oct. 9 to oppose establishing a PROUD Academy in Ansonia.
Hough, who said he has worked in the district for 20 years and has been at the middle school for 15, said the district's LGBTQ students are already accepted and integrated. "To say the LGBTQ community within Ansonia schools is accepted is an understatement," he told the board, adding that he does not believe there is a need for such a program in Ansonia.
Hough warned that a separate academy "may also take much needed funds away from the students of Ansonia," and said that while such schools may be needed elsewhere, he did not think Ansonia was one of those places. The minutes record no board response to the comment.
The comment was delivered during the public‑comment portion of the agenda; the transcript does not include details of any formal proposal or funding plan for a PROUD Academy. The board did not record a response in the public minutes.
