Board hears limits of evidence as district adopts Project ReadAI, continues NoRedInk pilot

Administrators described two literacy investments at the Jan. 15 budget workshop and said both are intended to support the district’s phonics and writing initiatives, but that rigorous outcome data are limited.

Project ReadAI was described as a teacher‑facing tool that generates decodable texts, fluency passages and comprehension items aligned to district benchmarks to help teachers customize materials. NoRedInk, piloted in the middle schools, provides scaffolded writing practice, real‑time feedback and pair review features; teachers cited improved student engagement and writing skills in early use.

Board members pressed for hard evidence linking those platforms to improved student outcomes. Administration acknowledged NoRedInk’s support is currently based on pilot feedback and district assessment trends at the middle‑school level, while Project ReadAI is new to the district and therefore lacks multi‑year outcome data.

Administration said training and professional learning are planned: initial soft launches or pilots, internal professional development where possible and vendor support when necessary. Implementation will aim to align tools with the district’s phonics curriculum and progress‑monitoring tools (for example, DIBBLES and Smarter Balanced results).

What’s next: The board asked that administration continue to collect teacher feedback and measurable outcome data as pilots scale so the board can evaluate ROI and instructional impact against the proposed budget.
