Sand Lake board adopts IPMC, approves DPW job description and new paid Veterans Day holiday

President Mollie Doerr called the Village of Sand Lake regular board meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Nov. 18. The board approved the meeting agenda and a consent agenda that included Oct. 21 minutes, the treasurer’s report and routine department reports.
The board voted to adopt the IPMC after a motion by Camilleri, supported by Helton. The roll-call vote was recorded as Camilleri, Doerr, Helton, Latham, Nyha Merritt and Wright — all voting yes — and the motion carried. No amendments or conditions were recorded.
The board also addressed several administrative items under new business. Board member Helton moved and Wright supported approval of a Public Works Operator job description; the motion passed unanimously. During public comment the board clarified that this position will be a replacement: DPW Supervisor Bill Cornelisse is scheduled to retire in April 2025.
Wright moved, with Camilleri supporting, to have the DPW Department remove the horseshoe pits; that motion passed with an all-yes vote. The board accepted the village Rules and Regulations (motion by Camilleri; supported by Wright) and approved adding Veterans Day as a paid federal holiday (motion by Wright; supported by Camilleri); both motions passed unanimously.
Brush pick-up was discussed but no formal action was taken; staff were directed to compile additional information and return with recommendations at a future meeting. During the public-comment periods, residents raised concerns about sidewalk smoking (one resident said they would file a formal complaint), long-smoldering burn piles and speeding on Lake Street and Ritchie. DPW Supervisor Bill Cornelisse said leaf pick-up will continue "until the snow falls," and he told residents that changing posted speed limits falls under Kent County jurisdiction; he noted a speed study on Ritchie was conducted about 1½ years ago.
The board offered brief member comments (Helton asked about signage to discourage use of Jake brakes; Cornelisse said signage can be posted but enforcement is not possible) and set the next regular meeting for Dec. 16, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. With no further business, President Doerr adjourned the meeting at 7:41 p.m.
