Sharon residents press for sidewalk material alternatives and tree protections on West Cornwall Road

About 20 residents and three engineering representatives attended a Jan. 15 informational session in Sharon to review designs for the West Cornwall Road sidewalk segment and to press for clearer trade-offs between concrete and asphalt, and for protections for street trees.
Residents said they wanted comparative information on cost, durability and appearance for concrete versus asphalt sidewalks, and asked how each material option would affect long-term maintenance and neighborhood character. Several attendees specifically raised the Honey Locust trees lining the Main Street portion and sought clarity on how the project’s sidewalk design would limit cracking from root growth.
Representatives from Cardinal Engineering were present to review the engineered plans and to take questions; meeting participants said the level of detail presented on materials and tree-impact mitigation was not sufficient to resolve their concerns. Town officials and the presenters indicated that an additional informational meeting will likely be scheduled to present comparative costs, longevity estimates, appearance examples and more detailed approaches to protecting existing trees.
No formal votes or decisions were recorded at the session; the meeting served as a public information and feedback opportunity. The session closed at 8:00 PM, and the town will notify the public when the follow-up meeting is scheduled.
