The Middlebury Selectboard reviewed a final road-safety audit from the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments at its June 15 meeting and noted a set of recommended short-, medium-, and long-term improvements for the Christian Road and Route 188 intersection.
The chair directed attention to the recommendations page and summarized short-term, low-cost actions that the town could pursue—refreshing pavement markings, tightening corner radii, installing clearer approach signage, and trimming vegetation on approaches—while noting the roadway is a state road and any pavement marking or major change will require coordination with the state Department of Transportation. "Short term improvements for us would be things like refreshing the paving markings ... tightening corner radii ... new signage," the chair said.
The audit did not recommend a stop sign, traffic signal, or rotary because traffic criteria were not met. The board said it would consult public works and the police commission about implementing recommended short-term measures and pursue funding opportunities identified in the audit for longer-term projects.
