Sand Lake council grants Nelson Township variance, approves pay changes and several contracts

At its Aug. 19 meeting the Sand Lake Village Council granted a variance for Nelson Township, adopted ordinances and resolutions setting pay for the council, approved insurance and service contract renewals, selected a landscaping proposal, approved DPW funding for a well house roof and tabled the schedule of fees.
Village President Doerr opened the Aug. 19, 2024 Sand Lake Village Council meeting at 7:00 p.m. and read the president’s report for the record. After roll call showed Councilmembers Doerr, Wright, Merritt, Christensen, Latham and Camilleri present (Councilmember Helton absent), the council adopted the agenda and moved through consent items.
During a public hearing on a Nelson Township variance, Councilmember Christensen moved to grant the variance; Councilmember Wright seconded. With no public comments offered during the hearing, the council carried the motion by roll-call vote (Doerr yes; Wright yes; Helton absent; Merritt yes; Christensen yes; Latham yes; Camilleri yes).
Under new business the council approved several routine contract and service items. Councilmember Latham moved to approve the MMRMA insurance renewal; Councilmember Camilleri seconded and the motion carried. Councilmember Wright moved to renew the Quality Air contract; Councilmember Christensen seconded and the council approved the renewal. The council also accepted the second Preferred Landscaping quote to include rocks, grass and lavender after a motion by Wright and support from Christensen.
On local governance changes, Councilmember Latham moved to adopt Ordinance 2024-02, which addresses Village Council and Village President compensation; Wright seconded. The council adopted the ordinance by roll-call vote with Doerr, Wright, Merritt, Christensen, Latham and Camilleri voting yes and Helton absent. Wright then moved to adopt Resolution 2024-07 to set compensation for the Village Council and President; Latham seconded and the resolution passed with the same roll-call results.
The council also adopted Ordinance 2024-03 to amend section 9.2 regarding creation of a Planning Commission. Latham moved adoption and Christensen seconded; the roll-call vote recorded Wright as abstaining, Helton absent, and the remaining members voting yes, and the ordinance carried. Following that action, Councilmember Latham moved to adopt Resolution 2024-08 to set compensation for the Planning Commission; Christensen seconded and the resolution passed with an abstention recorded for Wright.
Councilmember Wright moved to approve a Department of Public Works request for funding to repair or replace the well house roof; Christensen seconded and the motion carried. The minutes record approval but do not specify the funding amount. Councilmember Camilleri moved to table consideration of the schedule of fees; Christensen seconded and the motion to table carried.
During the final public comment period a resident asked the council to address tree trimming in the park. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 p.m.; the next regular council meeting is scheduled for Sept. 16, 2024.
