Jenifer Acosta, leader of the Midland County Housing Forward project, presented an analysis to the Village of Sanford council on Sept. 9 outlining a regional housing shortage and options local governments are using to add housing.
Acosta said the current housing market makes it difficult for businesses to move to the area and for residents to secure housing. She listed policy and zoning options used elsewhere, including adding a small apartment to an existing house or allowing a second stand‑alone dwelling on a property, duplexes, and rezoning commercial land for residential uses.
During the presentation Acosta reported that the Village has about 28 properties with vacant homes or that are otherwise buildable. The presentation was given for information; no formal action or changes to local zoning were proposed or voted on at the meeting.
Council members thanked Acosta for the data and did not take immediate policy action; the presentation will inform future discussions about housing strategy and potential zoning or land‑use changes.
