The Rangely Town Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2026‑06, designating Sept. 9 of each year as Dominguez‑Escalante Expedition Day. The resolution passed after brief congratulatory remarks and discussion about timing of local events.
Robbie Elon moved the resolution and Jimmy Dylan seconded. Supporters described a slate of events planned for this year — including an ice‑cream social to unveil a locally produced exhibit — and said the project received a $7,500 grant from the State of Colorado. One presenter said the exhibit effort has exceeded $10,000 when private contributions are included, and that the town is coordinating with Colorado Northwestern Community College; Northern Arizona University is also expected to participate in related activities this year.
Councilors asked that event planners consider Septemberfest timing and, where feasible, coordinate activities to maximize attendance. Organizers said they will try to align events so visitors attending the festival can also take part in expedition‑related programming.
Why it matters: The annual observance and funded exhibit aim to raise public awareness of the Dominguez‑Escalante expedition’s local history and to create tourism and educational programming that could draw regional visitors.
What’s next: Organizers plan a Canyon Pintado Dominguez‑Escalante tour on Sept. 11 and will provide contact information for Northern Arizona University representatives in advance of events.
