Resident raises maintenance concerns as recreation programs report high registrations

Recreation staff told the East Lampeter Park Board that programs continue to see strong participation while residents urged greater enforcement of park maintenance rules.

The recreation programs director reported 176 people registered in the last three days and “well over 1,200 people” registered on the site for 2026 events and activities. Staff listed upcoming offerings including chair yoga, a second movie night in August and multi-day trips scheduled later in the year.

During public comment, Kathy Cody identified herself and asked about planting donated wildflower seeds; staff said plantings had been ordered and that the lower area will include living plants. Cody later pressed for better enforcement of park cleanliness, saying volunteers and user groups sometimes leave trash: “they leave the trash filled and then it just drives me crazy that they don't respect for their own being,” she said, and volunteered to help with upkeep.

Board discussion covered pavilion reservations and accessibility: staff said Lafayette Pavilion reservations will wait until finishing touches are complete and that one or two ADA picnic tables still need to be built before reservations are opened broadly. The board also noted installation of a bench approximately halfway along the shooting-range trail plus planned dog-waste stations and trash cans at either end after approvals from the Madison County Conservation District and Kendall.

What happens next: staff asked residents with questions to email the recreation office; the board expects to confirm pavilion reservation timing after final inspections and to complete installation of trail amenities now that conservation approvals are in place.
