Sanford gets update on historic building septic needs and completes pump-track survey; planning bids still pending

Sanford building inspector Justin Finney reported on Jan. 13 that a walkthrough of 2234 N. Smith Street — a building north of the Sanford Historical Society — identified upgrading the septic system as the largest expense should the village pursue occupying the space. Finney said commercial septic standards differ from residential installation and that the village will prepare a budget comparison to the $500 monthly rent it currently pays to Jerome Township for office space.
Separately, Spicer completed a survey of the parcel along the rail trail that the council discussed as the pump-track site. Council member Carl Hamann said the next step is transferring the land to the village and coordinating with Midland County Parks and Recreation to finalize ownership and development plans.
Council also noted the village received no bids to update its Recreation Plan and (if needed) refresh the Master Plan. Staff said they will rework the requested outcomes and seek new bids, and that the village may decide to proceed without federal MEDC grant funds due to grant complexity.
The council did not take a final vote on acquiring the historic building or on the pump-track transfer during the meeting; both items require further administrative and legal steps.
