The Village of Sanford on Jan. 13 approved up to $5,000 to cover a survey, appraisal and closing costs as it pursues a property swap with the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce for land attached to the village ballpark at Center and Saginaw Road. Village President Dolores Porte described the Chamber’s willingness to trade its parcel in exchange for the ballpark-adjacent property; the parcel was estimated in discussion at about $20,000, with roughly $5,000 in additional associated costs.
Council member Leah Ziems moved to authorize up to $5,000 for the survey, appraisal and closing costs; Council member Carl Hamann seconded. The motion passed on a 4–1 vote: yeas from Don Whaley, Carl Hamann, Leah Ziems and Dolores Porte; a single no vote from Marcus Thrush.
The village plans to apply for grant funding to cover acquisition costs but was warned that some closing or preliminary costs may need to come from village funds. President Porte said she will work with staff to pursue available grants and next steps for transferring the property if the swap proceeds.
The council did not set a timeline for a final transfer; staff indicated the village will proceed with the survey and appraisal as the next administrative steps.
