Council refers generator-pad clearance and greenspace-encroachment options to Planning & Zoning

Council reviewed a resident’s appeal related to Sec. 4-76(11) of the City Code governing standby and emergency generator installation. The code requires a minimum clearance of 24 inches between a generator foundation and other structures and prohibits placement in required green space. The property owner had requested a 12-inch clearance and permission for a generator that would encroach 7 inches into a required 5-foot greenspace.

Council discussed safety and code-alignment options, including exploring an 18-inch minimum clearance consistent with manufacturer specifications and Fire Marshal/NFPA guidance, and the possibility of allowing up to 1 foot of restricted-greenspace encroachment for generator pads only (not for other accessory structures). Council also directed staff to investigate whether multiple generator installations could affect natural gas supply and to contact gas providers for engineering data. The council referred the proposed amendments to the Planning & Zoning Commission for further discussion. No final ordinance change was adopted at the meeting.
