The Bunker Hill Village City Council approved Ordinance No. 24-630 on July 24, 2024, extending a local declaration of disaster related to flooding and winds from Hurricane Beryl for an additional 30 days. The original declaration was issued July 6, 2024 by Mayor Robert Lord; the extension took effect immediately upon approval and carried 4-0 on a motion by Councilmember Keith Brown and second by Councilmember Carl Moerer.
City Administrator Gerardo Barrera explained the extension was authorized under Section 418.108(b) of the Texas Government Code, which limits an executive disaster declaration to seven days unless renewed by the governing body. The ordinance provides that the extension will remain in effect for 30 days or until terminated or modified by earlier ordinance when storm impacts no longer exist.
The extension preserves the City's emergency posture in order to allow continued access to emergency powers, mutual aid arrangements and streamlined procurement or operational flexibility while crews and staff address any remaining storm-related hazards and property impacts.
