Region One and North Canaan school administrators reported curricular approvals, student-assessment results and construction progress at the Oct. 8 North Canaan Board meeting.
Superintendent Melony Brady-Shanley reported that Region One approved three new courses at the high school — Introduction to Ceramics, Introduction to Acting and AP Chemistry — and noted a directive from the ABC Committee to circulate a firearm-safety letter and an ARO/SRO interest survey to local boards for discussion.
Principal Beth Johnson presented the school's SBAC results: 58% of students in grades 3–8 met or exceeded the achievement standard in English language arts; 54% met or exceeded the mathematics standard; and 77% of students in grades 5 and 8 met or exceeded the NGSS science standard. Johnson told the board students with high needs made “tremendous growth” according to the presentation slides.
Administrators also updated the board on professional development activities — including coaching at HVRHS and a Partners for Education workshop attended by 22 teachers and administrators — and reported construction progress at the high school: the cafeteria was described as about 95% complete and the auditorium expected to finish by mid-October, with a tentative Grand Opening on Nov. 4, 2024.
These items were presented for information; no formal votes were required on the course approvals or construction updates at this meeting.
