The North Canaan Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to approve several administrative and personnel actions, including a new contract for the school principal and a tuition waiver for a staff member’s child.
Beth Johnson, Principal, had her contract for the 2025–2026 school year approved by a 5–0 vote after the board concluded an executive session on contract negotiations. The contract is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2025. Mrs. Amy Dodge recommended the contract and Mr. Christopher Jacques seconded the motion; the full board—Mrs. Lindsey Crane, Mrs. Amy Dodge, Mrs. Amy Helminiak, Mr. Jacques and Mrs. Brooke Riva—voted yes.
The board also approved several other motions by unanimous vote. The board set a special Summer Goals and Objectives Retreat meeting for July 16, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (location to be determined). Mrs. Amy Dodge moved to set the meeting; Mr. Christopher Jacques seconded and the motion passed 5–0.
The board approved the issuance of a North Canaan Elementary School credit card for school use after a motion by Mrs. Dodge and a second from Mr. Jacques; the motion passed 5–0.
On a related personnel-administrative action, the board waived the tuition fee prescribed in Policy #5118.1 for the 2023–2024 school year for a nonresident student who is the child of a staff member. Mrs. Dodge recommended the waiver and Mrs. Brooke Riva seconded; the board voted 5–0 to grant the waiver.
Procedural motions earlier in the meeting—approved by unanimous vote—included moving the Superintendent’s report and the executive session to after the consent agenda and approving the Jan. 14, 2025 minutes.
The board adjourned at 7:20 p.m. and the minutes were later submitted by Kerry Rooney and approved on March 11, 2025. The principal contract takes effect July 1, 2025; other administrative items (credit card use and the tuition waiver) will be implemented according to district policy and administrative procedures.
