North Canaan Board approves policies, personnel hires and service contracts; clerk contract cleared after executive session

The North Canaan Board of Education on Oct. 8 approved a package of routine and operational items, including several policy updates, personnel actions and a vendor contract.
Board Chair Amy Dodge opened the meeting and the board first approved minutes for Sept. 10 and a Sept. 30 special meeting. The board then voted on multiple action items. The board approved a set of policy updates that included School Climate Policy 5131.911; Sexual Harassment/Title IX policies 4000.1/4200.1/5145.44; Non-Lapsing Education Fund 3171.1; Suspension and Expulsion/Due Process 5114; and Nondiscrimination Policy and Notice 0521. The motion passed with five votes in favor and one abstention (Mrs. Simmons).
Mrs. Dodge moved and the board unanimously approved a $330 PMT training stipend funded from the revolving fund for K–8 staff. The board also approved hiring Michael Spring as a full-time night custodian, effective Sept. 23, 2024, at $21.44 per hour.
On procurement, the board authorized a USA Waste & Recycling contract covering one 10-yard front-load pickup weekly at $671.58 per month and one 10-yard single-stream pickup every two weeks at $315.91 per month, a combined $987.49 per month plus delivery fees.
The board briefly entered executive session at 7:22 p.m. to discuss the Board Clerk contract. After returning, Mrs. Dodge moved to approve the clerk contract discussed in executive session; the board voted 6–0 to approve it.
The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
