Douglas Library raises $2,185 in plant sale; schedules July 18 fundraiser and summer programs

The board discussed a July Party fundraiser scheduled for Friday, July 18 from 5–7 p.m.; Chair Bunny McGuire suggested a Roaring 1920s theme and Norma said she would ask Bridget Taylor to design a poster. Carol Schulz will check with Freund’s about food; Norma said she will order roll-up appetizers from LaBonnes and chicken wings from the Country Club. Bunny McGuire will schedule a Friends’ meeting to support the event.
On finances, DeMay reported a check for $2,385.75 from the Sellew Fund and said she submitted the Wellner Fund application, which was due June 13. She also reported the board's appeal balance at $15,861.
Laura Moran, the librarian, outlined summer programming: she created the summer reading program and sent informational handouts to NCES and will begin a weekly story hour on Friday, July 11. Bonnie Kinsman proposed a summer reading plan for adults with ideas such as a New York Times Book Club-style contest. The library will host a Literacy Night for the Canaan Child Care Center on Monday, June 23 at 6 p.m. The meeting record notes two talks: Mike Godburn’s May presentation on the Canaan Mountain plane crash was well attended; Hal Cannon is scheduled to speak on antique guns and the former Norfolk armory on Wednesday, June 25 at 7 p.m. Taylor Lemon suggested a reptile program for children and asked Laura to explore that option.
No formal votes were recorded on the fundraiser, programs or grant applications at the June 11 meeting beyond the minutes approval; assignments for poster design, food coordination and orders were given to specific board members and staff.
